I'm not one of those women

Before I had children, I would hear women talk about how when they breastfed their children the weight just "fell right off of them". During my first pregnancy, talk like that gave me hope. I planned on nursing Nora from the beginning. I had dreams that by the time I went back for my 6 weeks check-up I would be back to my pre-pregnancy weight. Those dreams were destroyed within the first few weeks of her life.

I think I probably went for my 6 weeks check-up with Nora wearing maternity clothes and I am positive that I went for my 6 weeks check-up with Elyn wearing maternity clothes.

I am not one of those women who sees the weight falling off.

I hang on to the weight (or it hangs on me to be more precise) the entire time I am nursing! I read one time that a women who is breastfeeding is not going to lose that last 5 pounds (or in my case-10 pounds) until she has weaned BECAUSE if there was a natural disaster and she was not able to eat, she would still be able to feed her child because of the extra fat that she had.

Bring on the natural disaster and let's put that theory to the test! I think some woman came up with that lame theory because she was having trouble losing the last 5 pounds.

Not only do I have trouble buttoning my pants sometimes because of the "survival fat" but none of my shirts fit me like they are supposed to because of the expansion of my chest. After having Nora I did not understand why women spend thousands of dollars to have their breasts augmented. It still makes no sense to me. Bigger isn't always better in my opinion. Although, I can understand why women would spend thousands of dollars to put the "girls" back where they belong.

Elyn is 9 weeks old and I have been given the "okay" to exercise for 3 weeks now. Friday is the day!!!!! One of my Christmas presents is a gym membership (thanks mom!) WITH free childcare. I am excited about possibly becoming one of those women who has the weight fall off. Only, I am going to have to actually work at it.

Dallas,
Your blog is so fun to read! Everything you said is so true. With Emerson, I think I still wore maternity (I am not kidding!) until she was over two months old. It was just easier, and the name of the game is "survival" when they are newborns. Some people make it all look so easy, but to me adding a baby takes like three months to catch my breath. Good for you for already thinking about the gym. Impressive!

my gym membership (with the fee daycare) is litterally my life saver! it keeps me sane! i lost my weight once i stopped nursing and working out definitely helped too!! i even called my doctor when bailey was 4 weeks old and begged to get an early exercise okay!

I held on to 10 lbs as well. It never came off and is still persistently hanging around despite training for a half marathon, diabetic diet, etc. However, I just started a new "diet"...more like just changing the time of day I eat certain foods. We'll see! Good luck and try not to stress about it too much till you finish nursing. I know, I know...easier said than done.

Granted I haven't had a baby yet, but I don't think I'll be one of the types to drop the baby weight in 3 weeks- I hate those people. :) Even if you feel like you've still got your "survival" weight on- you look great! Hope the gym goes good! I haven't been in a good 6 weeks....

I love my gym membership with free childcare. It is time just for me and it makes me feel better.

My biggest suggestion is to hire a personal trainer. I have worked out for years, but not until I hired a trainer to help me with my body type did I see results. I've kept with her thru this pregnancy and it has kept me in shape. I'm still gaining weight, but I don't feel completely lousy about my expanding waistline!

Enjoy!!

I am glad someone else is finally talking about their weight! I initially lost weight with Bailey and Beckham but then put some on as I nursed because "I needed the extra calories". Unfortunately, extra calories are not to be eaten in nutty buddies and Dr. Pepper! This time around, obviously not nursing, the weight has stayed around a little longer. I am at my prepregnacy weight, but I never liked myself at that size so I'm going for my absolute goal weight. Why not?!! Luckily our church has a gym and a personal trainer and we have childcare that is only $2 an hour. I have NO EXCUSE for not being in shape. We plan on getting pregnant again this summer (I was told to wait at least 9 months) so my motivation is pretty strong to get to the size I want before the 4th c-section! UGGH!

Everyone always tells me.."It takes 9 months to have a baby"--and we expect our old body back right away. I think you're doing great. You're alreading thinking about the gym and shes only 2 months old!
ON ANOTHER NOTE: Laila has the same cough Elyn has. I rub baby vicks vapor rub on the bottom of her feet and it stops her cough temporarily(someone sent me an e-mail about it one time)but it actually works long enough for her to have a good night sleep.

I think that I have to agree with Julie...Elyn is only 2 months old and you look great (online in your pics that is, we can't see you in your underwear and that is where I critique myself most of the time!)Anyway, I cut out eating after 8pm and I have tried to cut out my coke habit (only 3 a week now) but I didn't loose all my baby weight with Parker until he was 9, almost 10 months old. That is when I stood on a scale and realized that I was back to my pre-Parker weight.

I am soooo not happy that everyone around us makes us feel this "pressure" to loose our weight so very quickly. It's just not right. I know, I lost it so I can't talk, but I worked my little tail off starting when we moved here (there is no gym in Graham, TX with babysitting so the gyms here in Ft. worth are a JOY!!) Parker was 7 months old....I honestly think that because I let my body rest and didn't kill myself so early (like I did try with the girls) that it just floated off when I finally DID go to the gym. I hope I haven't rambled. It just makes me sick to see all the running around of people that have 3 week old babies and think that they NEED to be at the gym getting skinny already. I know that Hollywood is alot to blame because we see those wonderfully skinny women just after giving birth, but come on...I would be too if I had a nanny and a personal trainer that worked with me 6 hours a day!!!

Don't stress Dallas, you are a beautiful woman who will indeed lose every pound. It may take a little bit, because NONE of us are "one of those women"....but I still wore my maternity clothes well after the time that I felt like I should have and the world didn't stop....

Thanks for your post! I love to read your blog, it keeps me sane to know that other mothers have the same struggles and we can all help each other with support and prayer...

I just want to "amen!" what you typed about clothes not fitting because of a large chest while you are nursing. Normally, I'm a pretty small bra-size, and before I was pregnant I always thought it would be great to have larger breasts. I've changed my mind. I want my little boobs back. My little guy is 8 months old, and I hope to nurse him until 12 months, so hopefully there's not too much left to go!

BTW, you don't know me. I found y our blog from Amy Bowman's site. I hope those last baby pounds come off soon. I'm still working on mine too!

Fortunately I was one that lost all the weight, BUT as soon as I slowed down on the breastfeeding, that weight came right back on, with vengence! I'm still having to work it off and he's TWO! Girl, I think you look great. I know it doesn't feel like it to you, but honestly, YOU DO! She's only 2 months, give yourself some credit here! Did you get a memebership to Worlds? If so, you need to come to some classes with me and Dina. She also teaches a class...we should make a date!
