What's on your shelf?

I love to read...LOVE IT!

I always have, as far back as I can remember, I have loved to read. When I would get in trouble, sometimes my punishment was to have certain books taken away.

Mom, I question that punishment now...

I have read so many good books over the years that I cannot keep track of them all. I should probably start making a list.

I need some advice on books to read. The summer is quickly creeping up (YEA!!!) and I should have a little more time to feed my passion.

What are some of your favorites?

But, before I get a list of books I have already read, let me tell you what has been on my shelf in the past:

  • EVERY SINGLE book by Karen Kingsbury-including the newest one "Take One"
  • EVERY SINGLE book by Francine Rivers...love her!
  • Just about every book written by Jodi Picoult-I'm having to take a break from her right now
  • Same Kind of Different as Me
  • Twilight-not crazy about the first book, so I didn't read any of the others
  • began The Shack

We go to the library once a week, but I don't get a whole lot of "Dallas" time while we are there. I am usually plucking Elyn from the top of bookshelves and doing the story time craft with Nora.

So, if I had a list with me before we went, my life would be so much easier! I know several of you are big readers and have some fabulous recommendations.

I can't wait to start my summer reading list!

I've been on a kick of reading books by Curtis Sittenfeld. She wrote American Wife and Prep - both were really good, and I'm reading another one of hers now.

Biography-wise, The Glass Castle is excellent, as was Mistaken Identity (about those two girls who were in an accident and mistaken for one another).

Christian-lit: Every Good and Perfect Gift by Sharon Souza.

The Today Show did a list of top spring reads a few weeks ago, so I'm on the library list for several of these: http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/30264317/

Can you tell I love to read too? Good luck! :)

D you have got to try Celia Rivenbark. I had Mom and Sister crying while I was reading aloud. Of course you have to read it in a Southern Accent but I'm sure that's no problem for you.

The Glass Castle is one of my favorites. I just finished "I, Mona Lisa" (historical fiction). It took me about 100 pages to get it, but then I LOVED it!!

I also liked "Sarah's Key" (another historical fiction) and "When Crickets Cry" by Charles Martin is super. My next book is "The Nazi Officer's Wife" (biography) and was told it was excellent.

The current Jodi Piccoult is great. I'm reading it right now.

I am reading the new hardback Jodi Piccoult right now...it is good...like I can't put it down good.

I liked Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, Secret Life of Bees, The Lovely Bones (it is being made into a movie right now), and The Thirteenth Tale. Those are just some I remember from reading this fall...I will let you know if I think of any others that you might like.

One of my favorite Christian authors is Dee Henderson. She writes romantic suspense.

Nickolas Sparks is a great author. Also Charles Martin. I can reserve books online where we live and then they will pull them and hold them up front. I don't even have to look at the shelves....it is great!

Rob Bells "Sex God" is wonderful and Chang's "Crazy Love" amazing. These are the two I have just read and both have been life changing! Continue with the Shack...Wow! Powerful stuff!

Hey Dallas! Lynn Austin is my favorite author. She writes Christian historical fiction that is GREAT! I find them less predictable than Karen K's books. My fav is a 3 part series that begins with "Candle in the Darkness." "A Women's Place," "A Proper Pursuit," and "All She Ever Wanted" are a few of her other titles that are also excellent. I hope you'll give them a try. :)

My library has the online request option, too. I love it! Our adult area is on the 2nd floor and children's area is on the 1st so I never make it up those steps. I just read American Wife and really enjoyed it.

I just read "The Ungarnished Truth" about a lady who won the Pillsbury Bake-off a few years ago -- even David thought it was interesting when he picked it up (it's a memoir).

Also, I love me a good John Grisham book.

And I just read a great book on hospitality (supposedly a Christian classic, but I hadn't heard of it before) -- Open Heart, Open Home -- really, really good! And challenging. I'll probably write a post about it soon.

I am currently reading the first book in FR's Mark of the Lion series and CANNOT put it down. I was going to recommend it, but looks like you've read it already. :)

A few other suggestions:
~ The Time Traveler's Wife
~ The Memory Keeper's Daughter
~ Pillars of the Earth
~ A Thousand Splendid Suns

And for chick-lit that always makes me laugh, I highly recommend anything by Marian Keyes.

My favorites are:

"The Poisonwood Bible" by Barbara Kingsolver
"A Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Atwood
"Clan of the Cave Bear" by Jane Auel
"Middlesex" by Jeffrey Euginides
"Fight Club" by Chuck Palahniuk

None of them are particularly Christian but they are all wonderfully written.
